Youth Engagement Strengthens Kenya's 15BillionTrees Programme Through Strategic Consultative Meeting
On March 24, 2026, Forest Development Secretary Mr. George Tarus held a consultative meeting with youth leaders aimed at strengthening the Government’s 15 Billion Trees Programme and advancing the broader ecosystem restoration agenda.
The meeting was attended by the Coordinator of the 15 Billion Trees Secretariat Ms. Susan Boit, Zablon Onguko of the Kenya Scouts Association, and other stakeholders, including artist Jua Cali.
Discussions centered on harnessing youth participation to accelerate national tree-growing efforts and enhance climate action initiatives.
Mr. Tarus lauded the youth for their commitment to environmental conservation, stating that the success of the 15 Billion Trees Programme largely depends on the active involvement of young people, whose energy, innovation, and dedication are critical in driving the national agenda and securing a sustainable future.
During the meeting, the Kenya Scouts Association proposed a partnership with the Ministry under the 15 Billion Trees Programme through an ambitious Guinness World Record attempt. The initiative aims to combine environmental restoration with large-scale youth mobilization in support of Kenya’s reforestation goals.
The event is scheduled for May 23, 2026, in observance of World Turtle Day, and is expected to mobilize 5,000 Scouts across seven counties, including Nairobi and the coastal counties of Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, and Taita Taveta, ensuring broad geographical reach.
To enhance public engagement, the initiative will incorporate cultural elements, including participation by the renowned Kenyan rapper and pioneer of the Genge music genre, Mr. Paul Julius Nunda
(Jua Cali). The Kenya Scouts Association is seeking the Ministry’s support as the primary technical partner, particularly in site preparation, species selection for coastal and urban ecosystems, and appropriate tree-planting techniques. Leaders underscored the importance of multisectoral collaboration and aligning the initiative with the 15 Billion Green Legacy framework.
