PS MUGAMBI CALLS FOR INVESTMENT IN EDUCATION AND ENVIROMENTAL STEWARDSHIPDURING MADARAKA DAY CELEBRATIONS
Forestry Principal Secretary Mr. Gitonga Mugambi presided over the 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations at Gankondi Primary School in Meru County, where he joined residents in commemorating the national holiday and reaffirmed the importance of collective action in advancing Kenya’s development agenda.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Mugambi emphasized that sustained investment in education and skills development remains a critical driver of economic growth, innovation, and national competitiveness. He noted that strengthening human capital is essential to achieving Kenya’s long-term socio-economic transformation goals and creating opportunities for future generations.
The Principal Secretary also called on communities to embrace environmental stewardship alongside educational advancement, stressing that sustainable development depends on the responsible management, protection, and restoration of natural resources.
He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to the national target of growing 15 billion trees by 2032, describing the initiative as a key component of Kenya’s climate action and ecosystem restoration efforts. According to Mr. Mugambi, the programme continues to contribute significantly to increasing national tree cover, enhancing environmental sustainability, and supporting community livelihoods.
As part of the celebrations, 3,000 avocado seedlings were distributed to residents to promote agroforestry and encourage greater community participation in environmental conservation. The initiative is expected to strengthen household incomes while contributing to landscape restoration and climate resilience efforts at the grassroots level.
The Madaraka Day celebrations brought together leaders, residents, and stakeholders in reflecting on the country's development journey and reaffirming their shared commitment to education, environmental sustainability, and inclusive growth.
