PS Convene Steering Committee to Advance Transparent Mineral Rights allocation and Sustainable Resource Allocation
Principal Secretaries Gitonga Mugambi (Forestry), Festus Ng’eno (Environment and Climate Change), Harry Kimutai (Mining), and Cyrell Wagunda (Public Investments & Asset Management) convened a Project Steering Committee meeting on the Mineral Rights Award Programme – By Public Tender on March 11, 2026, at the Public Works Building.
Chaired by PS Kimutai, the meeting reviewed progress on the programme under the Mining Act, which provides for the allocation of strategic mineral blocks through a competitive public tender process. The initiative underscores the Government’s whole-of-government approach to enhancing transparency, strengthening inter-agency coordination, and promoting the sustainable development of Kenya’s mineral resources.
During the meeting, Forestry PS Gitonga Mugambi emphasized the importance of integrating forest conservation and landscape restoration into extractive sector activities. He noted that rehabilitation of mined areas through afforestation and ecosystem restoration can significantly contribute to the Presidential 15 Billion Trees Growing Programme.
The discussions reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to responsible mineral development that safeguards ecosystems, supports community livelihoods, and advances Kenya’s target of restoring 10.6 million hectares of degraded landscapes by 2032.
PS Mugambi was accompanied at the meeting by Secretary, Forest Development George Tarus and Kenya Forest Service Chief Conservator of Forests Alex Lemarkoko.
