Kenya strengthens Climate- Smart Agriculture and forest restoration in Nandi County
March 30, 2026, the Government reaffirmed its commitment to climate action and sustainable livelihoods following the handover of Forest and Farm Facility (FFF) granOnts to farmer organizations in Nandi County.
The event, held at Kaimosi Agricultural Training Centre, was presided over by Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Mr. Felix Koskei and Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Dr. Deborah M. Barasa, accompanied by Principal Secretaries Mr. Gitonga Mugambi (Forestry) and Dr. Eng. Festus K. Ng’eno (Environment and Climate Change), alongside representatives from the Food and Agriculture Organization.
Mr. Koskei emphasized the need for accountability and effective use of resources to drive grassroots transformation, noting that the #15BillionTrees Programme remains central to restoring landscapes and creating green jobs.
“And I want to emphasize this: this journey is not for government alone. It is a whole-of-government, whole-of-society approach. It requires collaboration between national and county governments, development partners, private sector, communities, and individuals,” he stated.
Dr. Barasa highlighted that the grants will support climate-smart agriculture, value addition, and the integration of tree growing into farming systems, contributing to the target of restoring 10.6 million hectares and growing 15 billion trees by 2032.
Stephen Sang pledged the county’s support in achieving the national target of increasing tree cover to 30 percent by 2032 through community-driven restoration efforts.
Farayi Zimudzi underscored the role of partnerships in empowering farmer organizations and promoting sustainable land use for improved livelihoods and resilience.
The initiative marks a key step in aligning agricultural development with ecosystem restoration and climate resilience.
Also present at the event were Secretary for Forest Development Mr. George Tarus, Alex Lemarkoko of the Kenya Forest Service, and Lelmengi Josses Kiptoo, among other distinguished guests.
