Youth Take Center Stage in Climate Action as Forestry PS Engages National Youth Council
On 28th January 2026, Forestry Principal Secretary Mr. Gitonga Mugambi hosted a delegation from the National Youth Council, led by CEO Ms. Gloria Wawira, at the Ministry headquarters to strengthen youth participation in environmental conservation and climate action.
Discussions focused on coordination within the youth sector through the Council’s Sector Working Groups and the implementation of the Kijani Programme, a youth-led environmental initiative supporting the national target of growing 15 billion trees by 2032. The Council has already planted over one million trees nationwide, contributing to the country’s goal of increasing tree cover to 30 percent.
Beyond tree growing, the programme is creating green jobs for young people through skills in seedling production, nursery establishment, and other climate-smart enterprises that support livelihoods, food security, and resilience.
The PS commended the Council’s leadership in mobilizing youth and encouraged the integration of fruit trees to enhance nutrition and incomes. He also urged the Council to document and upload all tree-growing activities on the #JazaMiti App to support national tracking and impact assessment.
The meeting was attended by senior State Department officials, including the Coordinator of the #15BillionTrees National Secretariat.
