STATE DEPARTMENT OFFICIALS ENGAGES KAKAMEGA COUNTY LEADERSHIP AHEAD OF WORLD RAINFOREST DAY CELEBRATIONS.

Ahead of the commemoration of World Rainforest Day, a technical team drawn from the State Department for Forestry, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI), and other conservation stakeholders joined members of the local community for a forest restoration exercise at the Lianugu Forest Block.

The exercise formed part of ongoing efforts to rehabilitate degraded sections of the Kakamega Forest and strengthen sustainable forest management in support of Kenya’s national ecosystem restoration agenda.

During the exercise, participants removed invasive plant species, prepared degraded sites through pitting, and planted indigenous tree species to accelerate forest regeneration and improve the ecological integrity of the forest ecosystem.

The restoration activities underscored the importance of collaborative action involving Government agencies, conservation partners and local communities in protecting Kenya’s forests, conserving biodiversity and safeguarding critical water catchment areas.

The initiative also contributes to the Government’s national target of growing 15 billion trees by 2032, while advancing efforts to restore degraded landscapes, enhance climate resilience and promote sustainable management of the country’s forest resources.

The State Department for Forestry continues to work closely with its partners and local communities to implement practical conservation interventions that support biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration and a greener, more climate-resilient Kenya.
