MOMBASA COMMUNITY AND LEADERS UNITE TO PLANT 2000 MANGROVES IN MAJOR ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION DRIVE.

In a powerful demonstration of collective environmental action, stakeholders and local community members converged at Miritini Mchenjama in Jomvu Sub-County, Mombasa County, to undertake a large-scale mangrove restoration exercise aimed at breathing new life into the region's delicate coastal ecosystems. The collaborative initiative, which took place on July 7, 2026, saw the successful planting of 2,000 mangrove seedlings across a 1.2-hectare area. This vital conservation effort was spearheaded by the NG-CDF Mombasa County in close partnership with the Kenya Forest Service, the National Government Administration Officers, the County Government of Mombasa, local political leaders, schools, the Mombasa Kilindini Community Forest Association, and resident volunteers. By planting carefully selected Ceriops and Rhizophora mangrove species, the participants directly rehabilitated degraded marine forests, securing a natural defense system designed to protect shorelines from erosion, foster marine biodiversity, and build long-term climate resilience.

The restoration event was graced by Mombasa County Member of Parliament, Mr. Badi Twalib, who emphasized the indispensable role that healthy mangrove forests play in safeguarding the coastline and supporting the daily livelihoods of local fishing communities. He highlighted the need for sustained, active partnerships between state institutions, conservation groups, and grassroots communities to ensure the long-term survival and sustainable management of Kenya's blue carbon ecosystems. By successfully restoring this critical shoreline, the joint exercise highlighted a shared local commitment to environmental stewardship, directly contributing to the country's national targets of expanding tree cover and mitigating the impacts of climate change along its fragile coastlines.
