Forestry Principal Secretary Mr. Gitonga Mugambi meeting with representatives from the United Nations Development Programme

Kenya Strengthens Forest Carbon Agenda Through Strategic Engagement with United Nations Development Programme

On April 10, 2026, Forestry Principal Secretary Mr. Gitonga Mugambi held a consultative meeting with representatives from the United Nations Development Programme to advance strategic collaboration in Kenya’s forestry sector, with a focus on strengthening the country’s forest carbon agenda through targeted technical support and structured partnership frameworks.

During the meeting, UNDP briefed the Principal Secretary on ongoing progress in supporting Kenya’s forest carbon initiatives, including technical assistance in the development of the ART-TREES concept note and preparations towards registration under jurisdictional carbon market frameworks.

Discussions centred on strengthening technical systems to enhance transparency, environmental integrity, and the application of robust safeguards. Particular emphasis was placed on aligning Kenya’s efforts with international best practices, while safeguarding community interests and reinforcing accountability across the forest carbon value chain.

The engagement also explored practical pathways for Kenya to access results-based payments through high-integrity jurisdictional carbon markets, thereby unlocking sustainable financing to support forest conservation, landscape restoration, and community livelihoods.

The meeting reaffirmed Kenya’s transition from readiness to active participation in forest carbon markets, positioning the country as a credible and competitive player in the global carbon space, anchored on integrity, data-driven systems, and inclusive approaches that place communities at the centre.

Also present at the meeting were Secretary for Forest Development Mr. George Tarus, Dr. Margaret Kaigongi, and officials from UNDP.
