KENYA SHOWCASES FOREST INNOVATION TO FCLP DELEGATES IN NAIROBI
Delegates from the Forest and Climate Leaders’ Partnership (FCLP) visited Karura Forest on 4th March 2026 as part of the second day of the Ministerial Meeting activities in Nairobi, where Kenya showcased its strengthened forest protection and climate resilience initiatives.
The ministers and sherpas from member countries toured the Forest Fire Surveillance System Centre at the Kenya Forest Service (KFS). The delegation was guided by the Secretary for Forest Development, Mr. George Tarus, who briefed them on Kenya’s enhanced early warning systems, real-time monitoring technologies, and coordinated response mechanisms used to prevent and manage forest fires while safeguarding critical ecosystems.
The delegates also visited the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI), where they explored innovations in green construction and sustainable forest-based industries that support low-carbon development and economic diversification.
Later in the evening, the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Dr. Deborah M. Barasa, accompanied by the Principal Secretary for Forestry, Mr. Gitonga Mugambi, joined the delegates and hosted them for a dinner engagement. The Cabinet Secretary expressed appreciation for their visit and reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to strengthening collaboration under the FCLP framework.
She emphasized that strong partnerships, adequate financing, and shared innovation remain critical in advancing global climate action and promoting forest-positive development.
Also present were Belgium’s Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Peter Maddens, Secretary for Administration Mr. Patrick Meso, the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Forestry Research Institute Dr. Jane Njuguna, and Mr. James Mwai of Gatsby Africa,among distuingished guests.
