Kenya Leads Regional Dialogue on Decoupling Agriculture from Deforestation
On 24th February 2026, Forestry Principal Secretary Mr. Gitonga Mugambi presided over the opening of the Africa Regional Exchange on Scaling Solutions for Decoupling Agricultural Production from Deforestation in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The meeting brought together African government officials and FAO representatives to strengthen collaboration on sustainable land use, forest conservation, and climate resilience. Mr. Mugambi highlighted Kenya’s efforts under the National Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Strategy and the Presidential 15 Billion Tree Growing Programme, aiming to restore 10.6 million hectares and increase tree cover to 30 percent by 2032.
He emphasized inclusive implementation involving counties, community forest associations, and farmer organizations, noting that secure land tenure, access to finance, and credible monitoring systems are key to balancing agricultural growth with forest protection.
