Kenya Launches National Carbon Registry to Boost Climate Transparency

On 17th February 2026, the Government of Kenya officially launched the Kenya National Carbon Registry (KNCR) in Nairobi, a key milestone in strengthening transparency, trust, and accountability in carbon markets.
The event, presided over by Ministry of Environment, Climate Change & Forestry Cabinet Secretary Dr. Deborah M. Barasa, brought together senior government officials, development partners, and carbon market stakeholders, including Principal Secretaries Dr. Eng. Festus K. Ng’eno and Mr. Gitonga Mugambi, the EU and German ambassadors, and NEMA leadership.
Managed by the National Environment Management Authority, the KNCR is a digital platform for tracking, verifying, and managing carbon credits and Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs), ensuring that climate investments deliver measurable benefits to communities while safeguarding Kenya’s carbon assets.
