KENYA AND JAPAN INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION AGENCY STRENGTHEN THEIR COOPERATION AGREEMENT

Forestry Principal Secretary Mr. Gitonga Mugambi on 11th June 2026 presided over the signing of a Cooperation Agreement between the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change & Forestry and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), reaffirming the strong and enduring partnership between Kenya and Japan in advancing sustainable forest management and ecosystem restoration. The agreement is expected to strengthen collaboration in addressing environmental challenges, enhancing climate resilience and Building Capacity on Tree Improvement. The meeting was attended by senior officials from the State Department for Forestry, led by Secretary for Forest Development Mr. George Tarus, and a JICA delegation led by Global Environment Director Mr. Kurimoto Masaru. Speaking during the meeting, Mr. Mugambi lauded JICA for its continued support in promoting climate resilience through the Sustainable Forest Management and Climate Change Response Project (SFS-CORECC).He noted that the project has made significant contributions to strengthening forest governance, building institutional and technical capacity, promoting community participation in forest management and advancing landscape restoration efforts across the country.The Principal Secretary further noted that Kenya and JICA have collaborated in the forestry sector for more than 40 years, delivering transformative programmes that have enhanced sustainable forest management, biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability.
