Kenya and FAO Strengthen Partnership on Urban Greening Initiative
On 3rd February 2026, Forestry Principal Secretary Mr. Gitonga Mugambi hosted a high-level strategic meeting with representatives of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), led by Ms. Tiina Vähänen, at the Ministry headquarters in Nairobi.
The discussions focused on strengthening collaboration and scaling up Kenya’s participation in the Green Cities in Action for Africa project under FAO’s Green Cities Programme, an Italian-funded initiative supporting inclusive, resilient, and sustainable urban development across selected African cities.
The meeting emphasized the critical role of urban greening and urban forestry in improving public health, enhancing climate resilience, supporting food security, and creating green livelihoods. Participants also highlighted the need for coordinated implementation, production of quality tree seedlings, and development of a strong proposal to advance Kenya’s green city agenda.
Also in attendance were Forest Development Secretary Mr. George Tarus, senior State Department officials, and FAO technical representatives.
