CS BARASA LEADS KENYA'S WORLD MANGROVE DAY CELEBRATIONS IN LAMU COUNTY

On 26th July 2026,Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Dr. Deborah M. Barasa led Kenyans in commemorating the  World Mangrove Day  2026 at Majengo Grounds in Lamu County.

The event was attended by Lamu Governor H.E. Issa Timamy, Investment Promotion Principal Secretary Mr. Abubakar Hassan, representing the Principal Secretary for Forestry Development, senior officials from the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI), development partners and local communities.

In her address, Dr. Barasa reaffirmed the Government's commitment to conserving Kenya's mangrove forests through the 15 Billion Trees Growing Programme and other national restoration initiatives. She noted that Lamu County hosts nearly 61 per cent of Kenya's mangrove forests, making it a key area for climate resilience, biodiversity conservation and the blue economy.

Governor Timamy pledged Lamu County's continued collaboration with the National Government to advance mangrove restoration and support the national target of growing 15 billion trees by 2032.

The Cabinet Secretary also commended community-led conservation efforts, highlighted the Lamu Blue Carbon Project, unveiled the rebranded KEFRI National Centre of Excellence for Mangrove and Estuarine Research and Development and called for stronger collaboration to protect Kenya's coastal and marine ecosystems.
