Forestry Principal Secretary Hosts World Bank Delegation on Climate Finance and Landscape Restoration

On Tuesday, 18 November, 2025, Forestry Principal Secretary Mr. Gitonga Mugambi, hosted a delegation from the World Bank Group, led by Mr. Isfandyar Zaman Khan, Lead Financial Sector Specialist, at the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Headquarters in Nairobi.

The meeting focused on strengthening Kenya’s financial and institutional capacity to mobilize climate finance in support of the #15BillionTrees National Tree Growing and Ecosystem Restoration Programme, which targets increasing the country’s tree cover to 30 per cent by 2032.

Discussions also highlighted the Kenya Watersheds Services Improvement Project (KEWASIP), a flagship collaboration between the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry and the World Bank. The project aims to restore degraded landscapes, enhance watershed services, and strengthen climate resilience through sustainable land management practices across critical ecosystems.

The engagement underscored the importance of strategic partnerships in scaling up landscape restoration efforts, improving ecosystem services, and unlocking innovative financing mechanisms to support Kenya’s climate action goals.

The Principal Secretary was joined during the meeting by the KEWASIP Project Coordinator, Dr. Winnie Musila, and the Deputy Director for Ecosystems and Biodiversity, Mr. Kanundu Ngumbao.
